rhinoplasty Faq

immediate post-op

my nose has “red goo” coming out the nostrils, is this normal?

Yes. This is blood mixed with mucus and will continue for up to 2 weeks post-op.

dried blood is blocking my nostril, can i pick it out with a cotTon bud, tweezers or other household implement?

No. Using the saline douches (FLO solution) will help to reduce this and will avoid infection which can cause complications to your surgery.

my dressings are dirty/have dried blood on them, can i clean them?

No. Keep the dressings dry at all times. The dried blood will not cause any problems. The nasal splint should stay dry for around 1 week.

I can’t breathe through my nose after surgery - i thought it was meant to be better!

Blood, mucus and the swelling of the soft tissue inside the nose means that airflow often is worse before it gets better. You may also have plastic splints inside the nose that contribute to the blockage. These will be removed at around 1 week.

i’m feeling better at 5 days post-op, can i go for a hike or a bike ride?

No. Increased exertion and airflow can hamper your recovery and cause bleeding. Heavy exercise is not recommended until cleared with your Surgeon.

i seem to have a lot more bruising and swelling than the person next to me in the hospital. is this normal? what did you do to me?

Each individual patient has an individual problem which requires a tailored solution. Some patients may have a totally different nasal procedure to yours which did not require re-breaking of the nasal bones, this may result in less swelling. Even the same procedure in different patients can have varying degrees of swelling and bruising.

i used to use nasal spray from the chemist which helped me breathe. can i use this to improve my breathing after surgery?

No. The only thing that goes up the nose after rhinoplasty, is salt water. Do not use any other sprays, creams, ointments unless specifically indicated by Dr Floreani.

MY PLASTIC NASAL SPLINT HAS FALLEN OFF. WHAT DO I DO?

You may gently place the splint back in place and, if need be, secure it with some Elastoplast tape. Please contact the rooms to let our team know.
